Overview of Case
kyphoplasty in indore

Here’s a case report on a 48-year-old female with a vertebral fracture (backbone fracture) at D12 treated with bipedicular kyphoplasty by Dr. Anshul Agrawal, Sparsh Spine & Pain Centre, Indore:

Case Report:

Patient: 48-year-old female, h/o fall from bed 2 weeks back

Presenting Complaint:

  • Severe back pain
  • Localized pain and tenderness at the thoracolumbar spine (mid back)
  • Difficulty in changing position

Clinical Examination:

  • Neurological examination revealed no motor or sensory deficits ( no numbness or limping in walking)
  • Tenderness and localized pain on palpation at the D12 vertebral level (at midback)

Imaging Studies:

  • X-ray: Demonstrated a wedge compression fracture of the D12 vertebra.

MRI & CT Scan:

Confirmed the diagnosis and ruled out any neurological complications such as spinal cord compression

Diagnosis:

Wedge compression fracture of D12 vertebra

Treatment:

  • Bipedicular Kyphoplasty:
    • Performed by Dr. Anshul Agrawal & Team Sparsh spine and pain center Indore. Under fluoroscopic guidance, two small incisions were made over the spinous process of D12. Cannulas were inserted percutaneously into the vertebral body through the pedicles.

Post-operative Course:

  • The patient experienced immediate and significant pain relief post-operatively.
  • The patient was discharged the next day with good recovery and no pain.
  • Pain medication was gradually tapered off.

Follow-up:

  • At follow-up visits, the patient reported continued improvement in pain and function.
  • Radiological imaging demonstrated significant cementing of vertebrae in AP and lateral X-rays.

Discussion:

  • Kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that provides effective pain relief and improves spinal stability in patients with vertebral compression fractures.
  • Bipedicular kyphoplasty offers several advantages, including reduced risk of neurological complications and improved restoration of vertebral height.
  • Early intervention with kyphoplasty can prevent further spinal deformity and improve the patient’s quality of life.

Conclusion:

This case report demonstrates the successful treatment of a vertebral compression fracture with bipedicular kyphoplasty. The procedure provided significant pain relief and improved spinal stability in this patient, allowing for a rapid return to normal activities.
